57th Legislative Assembly
The 57th Legislative Assembly consisted of a Senate with 49 senators and a House of Representatives with 98 representatives. The 57th Legislative Assembly organized December 5-7, 2000, and met in regular session from Tuesday, January 9, 2001, through Saturday, April 28, 2001. The Legislative Assembly also met in special session from Monday, November 26, 2001, through Friday, November 30, 2001, to consider legislative redistricting.
The 25 senators from odd-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the November 1998 general election, and the 24 senators from even-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the 2000 general election.
Two representatives are elected from each of 49 senatorial districts. The representatives from odd-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the November 1998 general election and the representatives from even-numbered districts were elected to four-year terms at the 2000 general election.
There were 934 bills (479 in the House and 455 in the Senate), 124 concurrent resolutions (72 in the House and 52 in the Senate), and 3 memorial resolutions introduced during the regular session. Of the total 1,061 bills and resolutions introduced, 298 House bills, 287 Senate bills, 51 House concurrent resolutions, 41 Senate concurrent resolutions, and 3 memorial resolutions passed. The Governor signed 580 bills into law. He vetoed five bills, and all of the vetoes were sustained. Four vetoes were item vetoes and did not affect the entire bill. Thus, 584 of the 585 bills have, or will, become law.
There were two bills introduced and passed during the special session. The Governor signed both bills on November 30, 2001.
