56th Legislative Assembly
The 56th Legislative Assembly consisted of a Senate with 49 senators and a House of Representatives with 98 representatives. The 56th Legislative Assembly organized December 8-10, 1998, and met in regular session from Tuesday, January 5, 1999, through Saturday, April 17, 1999.
There were 937 bills (495 in the House and 442 in the Senate), 140 concurrent resolutions (81 in the House and 59 in the Senate), and two memorial resolutions introduced. Of the total 1,079 bills and resolutions introduced, 278 House bills, 284 Senate bills, 58 House concurrent resolutions, 50 Senate concurrent resolutions, and both memorial resolutions passed. The Governor signed 555 bills into law. He vetoed seven bills, and five of the vetoes were sustained. One veto was overridden and one veto was an item veto and did not affect the entire bill. Thus, 557 of the 562 bills have, or will, become law.
