55th Legislative Assembly
The 55th Legislative Assembly consisted of a Senate with 49 senators and a House of Representatives with 98 representatives. The 55th Legislative Assembly organized December 3-5, 1996, and met in regular session from Monday, January 6, 1997, through Friday, April 11, 1997.
There were 881 bills (482 in the House and 399 in the Senate) and 116 concurrent resolutions (53 in the House and 63 in the Senate), one resolution, and two memorial resolutions introduced. Of the total 1,000 bills and resolutions introduced, 297 House bills, 257 Senate bills, 38 House concurrent resolutions, 52 Senate concurrent resolutions, the one Senate resolution, and both memorial resolutions passed. The Governor signed 545 bills into law. He vetoed 11 bills, and seven of the vetoes were sustained. Two vetoes were item vetoes and did not affect the entire bill. Thus, 547 of the 554 bills have, or will, become law.
